How to Identify Pantry Moths & Clothes Moths

Pantry moth larvae infest stored dry foods, while clothes moth larvae feed on susceptible animal-derived materials. Finding the source matters because an adult moth flying through a room doesn’t reveal where larvae are developing. Food-storage areas and vulnerable fabrics may both need inspection.

Signs that can help narrow the source include:

  • Larvae or webbing in stored foods: Inspect dry products and the areas where they’re kept.
  • Damage to natural fabrics: Fabric-feeding larvae may consume feathers, fur, hair, silk, and wool.
  • Damage in hidden areas: Larvae often feed beneath clothing collars or within folded sweaters.
  • Damage to blended or soiled material: These larvae can attack cotton or synthetic fabric when it’s soiled or interwoven with natural animal fibers.

Adult webbing and casemaking moths tend to avoid light and are rarely seen flying during the day. This behavior can allow larvae to remain active in dark, protected storage spaces even when few adults are visible.

Visual Features of Clothes Moths

The adult webbing clothes moth is gold-colored, has a tuft of reddish hair-like scales on its head, and measures about one-half inch across the wings. The casemaking clothes moth has brownish wings with three dark spots on each front wing.
